Role Overview

Saab UK is seeking a talented and innovative Software Engineer to join its underwater robotics division, supporting the development of next-generation autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicles.

As part of one of the world's leading defence and security organisations, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining advanced software solutions that support cutting-edge underwater robotics technology. Working within a highly skilled engineering team, you will contribute to both new product development and the enhancement of existing systems used in complex marine environments.

The successful candidate will combine strong software engineering expertise with a passion for innovation, working across backend systems, control software, web technologies, and robotics applications to deliver reliable, scalable, and high-performance solutions.

This role is ideal for an experienced software professional who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and contributing to technology that has real-world impact across defence, security, and marine operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop software solutions for next-generation underwater robotic systems

  • Support and enhance existing software products and codebases across multiple platforms

  • Develop control software and backend systems to support vehicle functionality and performance

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver innovative technical solutions

  • Contribute to software architecture, design reviews, and development best practices

  • Support testing, integration, and ongoing product improvement activities

The Successful Applicant

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a relevant Engineering discipline

  • Extensive commercial experience using C++

  • Experience developing software within engineering, robotics, or technical environments

  • Strong understanding of software design principles and system architecture

  • Experience developing backend applications and server-side systems

  • Understanding of control software development concepts

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work effectively within collaborative engineering teams

  • Excellent communication and technical documentation skills

  • Windows and Linux development environments

  • Backend server design and architecture

  • Standard web technologies

Desirable

  • Experience within robotics, autonomous systems, defence, or marine technology sectors

  • Experience developing software for embedded, control, or real-time systems

  • Understanding of autonomous vehicle or underwater systems technologies
